Character Name: Flonne
Character Series: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
Age: 1509
Background: Flonne comes from Celestia, the land of the angels. Under the tutelage of the Seraph, she is still an angel trainee, and therefore is low ranked. One day, when she was with the Seraph, he gave her a very important mission: She was to assassinate the king of demons, Krichevskoy. Although confused at this odd request, she agreed to go. It was then that the Seraph gave her a pendant that would allow her to be in the Netherworld; without it, she would become weak, and even die.
Heading to the Netherworld, Flonne successfully infiltrated the castle thanks to the Prinnies having partied themselves to sleep after the successful raid on Vyer’s – I mean, Mid-boss’ castle. As she was searching for the King’s room, she instead was found by Laharl, who heard her talking to herself as she wondered whether or not it was good to assassinate somebody. After a brief exchange, Flonne realized that she had failed, and left a shocked Laharl after promising to try again later. Laharl, angered that an assassin had made it into the castle, led a party to go find her. After catching up to her in a frozen over area of the Netherworld, Flonne was horrified to hear Laharl say that demons could not love. Refusing to believe this, she made the decision to stay in the Netherworld to find out if such a thing could be true.
Soon afterwards, Laharl led a team on a raid of the richest demon’s palace. After battling the lord of the palace, Hoggmeiser, Laharl was about to kill the squealing pig of a demon when Hoggmeiser’s son came to defend him. After seeing this, Flonne realized that demons could love, and pleaded with Laharl to let Hoggmeiser live. When he reluctantly spared Hoggmeiser’s life, Flonne happily discovered that even Laharl had a little kindness in his heart, and decided to continue staying with him in hopes that she may see his kindness grow. Her belief that Laharl can indeed love is further proven when he jumps into a pool of lava to retrieve her pendant. While this was partially because she promised him a “great gift”, she remains convinced that Laharl is beginning to learn how to love.
However, the Archangel Vulcanus was not pleased with Flonne’s actions. After she helped the prince become an Overlord, Vulcanus became sure that she was manipulating the demons so that she may one day return to take over Celestia. With this thought in mind, he went to the humans and warned them of an (false) impending invasion by demons with the hope that the humans would destroy the evil demon scum once and for all. Unfortunately for Vulcanus, Laharl and his party manage to defeat the hero sent by the humans: Captain Gordon, the Defender of Earth. However, because Flonne helps him in this battle, she commits the grave sin of harming a human, which Vulcanus sees as proof that she is evil. Mustering angelic troops, he sets off to destroy the unaware Flonne.
As the humans’ fleet of ships attacks the Netherworld, Laharl begins taking down ship by ship. However, thanks to Flonne’s influence, he gives the humans a chance to retreat before destroying the ships. Flonne happily points out that this means he is not completely devoid of love, which Laharl weakly denies.
After battling through the Battleship Gargantua, it becomes apparent that the angels are involved. Confused, Flonne comes to the terrible conclusion that the angels are involved with the humans’ attack on the Netherworld. With this in mind, she informs Laharl that she must return to Celestia to find out what is going on. To her surprise, Laharl agrees to go with her under the pretext of sizing up the Seraph Lamington.
Laharl’s party makes it through Celestia, and Flonne is forced to fight against her fellow angels, who are all under orders to execute her as a traitor. It is soon revealed that Vulcanus is behind everything with his ideal of “peace”, with himself lording over all demons, humans, and angels. After defeating him in a battle, the party sets out to meet the Seraph and learn the truth... but before they reached it, Flonne was whisked off to Memento Eden.
Personality: Flonne is, as Laharl so well puts it, a love freak. She believes that the power of love can do anything. She also believes that every single person is capable of love, no matter how cold or evil they may appear. When it comes to these people, she becomes determined to see if they are so truly unable to love as they think.
Flonne is also a ditz. She believes almost anything that someone tells her, unless it’s related to the lack of being able to love. Because of this, many things tend to go over her head, and they have to be explained to her. She also has a rather fantastical imagination inspired by television shows, leading her to on occasion pretend that she is something she is not. A ninja, for example.
She has a particular liking for shows about super heroes, both the typical American kind and the Sentai-type. As a result, she loves anything super hero-like, and sometimes tries to mimic super heroes by coming up with poses and lines that a super hero might use. She has also come up with stories focused around herself as a super hero, who battles the evil demoness Etna.
Flonne is an incredibly kind and cheerful person. Always optimistic, she is always trying to spread kindness and love around. She is easily pleased, and has a great love of small wonders such as flowers. She holds great reverence towards her master, the Seraph, and strives to follow his teachings to the best of her abilities. She is also against harming others, innocent or otherwise, and believes wholeheartedly in forgiveness. So strong is her belief that she would fight against even Laharl to protect those who she deems in need of reconciliation (as proven, unfortunately, by both of the endings in which she is killed by a merciless Laharl and Etna). However, her time in the Netherworld has corrupted her slightly, and she sometimes displays heated anger towards her demon allies, although this is almost always triggered by their disregard of life.
